St. Sharbel

Known for his healing miracles, St. Charbel was a Maronite Catholic priest, monk, and hermit.

Born in 1828 in Bekaa Kafra (northern Lebanon), St Charbel (born as Youssef Antoun Makhlouf) was the youngest of five children. He grew up in a pious home. Passionate about prayer, he soon followed his two hermit uncles in the hermitage of the St Antonious Kozhaya monastery and was converted to monastic and hermetical life. Charbel is the religious name that Youssef chose for himself when he joined the Lebanese Maronite Religious Order. He died on Christmas Eve, 1898. Several months after his burial, light shone from his tomb. His body was found intact and transpiring water and blood. In 1965, Saint Charbel was beatified by Pope Paul VI. On October 9th 1977, Saint Charbel was canonized. St. Charbel is known for working miracles both during his life and after his death.
